Cap badge, British India Steam Navigation Company

Black wool cap badge of British India Steam Navigation Company over a core. Britannia is depicted standing, facing left, in front of a lion. Britannia and the lion are both embroidered with gold purl and have silk thread work for their facial features. Brittania’s skirt is made from metal thread and gold bullion. Gold bullion has also been used for the lion’s mane and Britannia’s sash. Britannia is wearing an applied gold plate helmet and carrying a shield of white and faded red silk thread work and a trident of gold coil. Applied coiled metal also outlines the shield. Britannia and the lion are surrounded by laurel leaves of gold purl and stems of gold coil.
The badge is attached to a mohair cap band.
