Cap ribbon. Coast Guard uniform: pattern 1860

Coast Guard cap ribbon circa 1860.

Black silk ribbon with the inscription 'COAST GUARD' in block letters surrounded by a rope twist border all painted in gold.

The Coast Guard, or Preventive Water Guard as it was originally known was established by the Treasury to prevent smuggling. By the 1820s, they were also trained in lifesaving. By mid-century they were under the auspices of the Admiralty and served an additional purpose: to provide a reserve of trained seamen.
