This uniform was originally made in 1829 by Clancy of Dublin; the sleeves were altered for the 1843 uniform regulations. The primary difference between the patterns of 1827 and those of 1843 is the white slash and blue cuff, which features in the latter.

The breast and shoulders of this coat are interlined with a very heavy gauge felt. The garment is further shaped by a series of lines of running stitch that serve to hold the interlining in place and create the effect of a very rounded chest.

Commander Henry Bolton (1796-1853), to whom this uniform belonged, became a commander in 1829 and ended his career in charge of a district in the Irish Coastguard.
