Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1827-43
Full dress trousers of blue wool. The waistband is lined with glazed, printed cotton and the back has a gusset of black silk. The front has wooden button fastenings with additional wooden buttons to secure braces. On the legs, to the front of both the outside seams are 1 1/2 inch-wide stripes of gold lace. There is also a strap of blue wool that secures across the instep to ensure the fit of the trousers.
Commander Henry Bolton (1796-1853), to whom this uniform belonged, became a commander in 1829 and ended his career in charge of a district in the Irish Coastguard.
