Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1843

Double-breasted coat of blue wool facecloth worn by Admiral George Ourry Lempriere (1787-1864) while Rear-Admiral. The sleeves are gathered at the shoulders and on each shoulder of the bodice are four eyelets for securing epaulettes. The sleeves terminate in a mariner’s cuff. The slash is of blue wool edged with gold lace and has three small gilt brass buttons. The cuff is of white twill wool with a wide border of gold lace. The coat has a stand-up collar of white wool edged in gold lace that fastens with a large brass hook and eye.

The collar is lined with blue wool and reinforced with four rows of running stitch. The breast of the coat is lined with blue wool and interlined with wadding that is held in place by rows of running stitch. The shoulders have been interlined with extremely heavy gauge red wool and buckram to give added support to the epaulettes. There is a label sewn into the collar with the following inscription written in ink: ‘Coat worn by Captain George Ourrey Lampriere R.N. afterwards Admiral -- Served under Lord Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801 and under Sir Alexander Cochrane at the taking of Guadaloupe West Indies 1810 d at Pelham January 16 1864.’
