This cocked hat was worn by Commander Henry Bolton (active 1829). It is of beaver felt, which retains a great deal of the original fur nap. On the front is a large cockade of ribbed black silk ribbon. In keeping with the regulations for 1827, the hat is bound in black silk ribbon that has an oak leaf and acorn pattern, indicating the rank of the wearer. This is also indicated by the two loops of gold bullion, of which the central one is twisted. The crown in lined with cherry red silk backed with paper and stamped with the maker’ inscription: ‘.B. & W. Wilson/Manufacturers/London.’ The uniform regulations of 1827 introduced a radically different uniform to that worn previously.
