Royal Naval pattern: 1856
Pair of scales worn by the Reverend R.W. Inigo Jones when a sub-lieutenant. It is of gold lace with a fouled anchor on each scale in silver plate and purl. The edge of the scale features a wide border of gold thread, bullion and plate twisted around a wood core. At one end is a gilt brass button of the following pattern: rope twist outer border, raised inner border, crown above a fouled anchor on a lined ground. The crescent of the underside of the scale is lined with black tabby-weave wool. The rest of the scale is lined with black leather. There is a large brass hook, eye and clip system for attaching the scale of the shoulder of the uniform. Stamped on the brass hook are the maker’s details: 'FRASER & DAVIS/ 78&79 HIGH ST PORTSMOUTH'. There is also an indication of which shoulder, left or right that the scales should be worn.
This pattern of scales for the rank for sub-lieutenant was first introduced in 1856 when the mate was made a sub-lieutenant.
