Sennit hat
Sennit hat covered with black tarred fabric to make it waterproof. The inside is lined with blue twill.
This hat belonged to Daniel William Harley who served in the 2nd Ashantee War, and was one of Commodore Commerell's gig's crew when he was dangerously wounded in August, 1873. He was Captain of the Foretop on HMS 'Alert' during Nares' Arctic expedition and as one of Markham's sledge crew achieved a record furthest north on 12 May 1876. Serving as a Petty Officer 1st class on the 'Eurydice', Harley drowned when she foundered off the Isle of Wight .
