Coat
Waterman’s coat of red wool. The coat is single-breasted with 12 cone-shaped silver buttons. The coat has a standing collar with tabs of red silk velvet edged with silver braid with 'PAC' worked in the central panel in coiled silver thread. The sleeve caps are of red wool over leather, faced with red silk velvet and edged with silver braid. The sleeve terminates in a mariner’s cuff. The slash is edged in silver braid and fastens with five cone-shaped silver buttons. The cuff is also edged in silver braid. The waistband is of red wool edged with silver braid. The skirts and lining have been gathered in a tight cartridge pleat.
The inside of the coat is fully lined with red and yellow shot twill (wool/silk blend). The full skirt has cartridge pleats at the top. The chest and under arms are padded in quilted using a floral motif, as is the yoke. The sleeves are fully lined with red/yellow wool/silk twill.
The coat and badge (PLT0753) were won by William Taylor, a waterman, who participated in the Royal Regatta to commemorate the coming of age of Queen Victoria’s second eldest son, Prince Alfred on 7 August 1865.
