Breeches

Pair of black doeskin breeches belonging to naval chaplain Reverend Richard Swanwick Hartley. The breeches have a five button front closure. The buttons are of bakelite and stamped 'Gould & Son Portsmouth.' The breeches fasten at the knee with three black silk covered buttons. There are two side pockets and one fob pocket, the pocket bags are of white twill, with the exception of the fob pocket which is of blue and white stripped twill. The breeches fasten at the knee with three black silk covered buttons. They are lined with brown silk around the knees. The waistband is lined with blue, red and brown stripped twill, and below this band another lining of glazed brown cotton.

Hartley was appointed a naval chaplain in 1886. However, chaplain’s dress does not appear in regulations until 1891. This tailcoat, waistcoat, breeches and silk stockings would have been part of evening wear, as is noted in the 1891 regulations: '…in the evening, when officers wear full dress or ball dress, the waistcoat shall be a black silk cassock one, and, instead of trousers, shall be worn black cloth knee breeches, with black silk stockings and patent leather shoes with silver or plated buckles.'
