Cap, South Eastern Railway

Blue wool peaked cap of South Eastern Railway. Blue wool cap badge bearing a red cross overall on a shield of red and white applied silk fabric. The shield encloses a horse (located at the centre of the cross) and a demi-lion with hindquarters represented as a train (above the cross), both of metal purl. The shield and cross are outlined by metal coil and are surmounted by a castle of metal purl, black silk and metal coil. The whole is surrounded by laurel leaves of metal purl with stems of coiled gold metal. The cap badge is attached to a black wool cap band with foliate scroll pattern and a scalloped edge.
The cap’s visor is made of card faced with black leather (green on the under side) with oak leaves embroidered with metal thread work to indicate rank and black leather binding on the edge of the visor. The black leather strap across the visor is fixed with a gilt button to either side of the cap. The button bears a crown within a wreath surmounted by ‘S.E.R’.
On the interior of the cap there is a black leather hat band and black silk lining with an unknown makers mark stamped in white.
