Cap
Thames waterman's cap belonging to Henry Hayes.
Red cloth peaked cap in schoolboy style, from the Waterman's uniform of Henry Hayes, Deptford. Watermen were the equivalent of water taxis rowing passengers up and down the River Thames. Henry Hayes was a winner of the Doggett Coat and Badge Race in 1920. The race is the oldest annual sporting event in Britain, and began in 1715 to commemorate the first anniversary of the accession of George I to the throne. It was organised by Thomas Doggett, an actor and comedian. The race starts at London Bridge and finishes in Chelsea, and is still held to this day.
