Submarine liquid compass and binnacle

Bowl- Black painted brass, filler plug at side, expansion chamber at base incorporated with glazed bottom. Inside of bowl painted white with four black lubber lines painted on side. Mounted in a black painted brass gimbal ring 10.25" (26cm) dia.
Card- Dia 6.75 (17cm) White painted mica (?) with black markings, graduated on both surfaces to 1/4 points and to 360 degs. Attached to a large white float at centre.
Needle- Six needles of circular section are mounted on a framework below card and float.
Pivot- Pivot stem is secured by a brass stud at centre of bottom glass of bowl and engages in a jewelled pivot cap in centre of underside of float.
Binnacle- Consists of a wooden base board 16.5 x 16.5 x 1.0" (41.9 x 41.9 x 2.5cm) to which are attached two vertical pices of wood 28" (71.1cm) high and 13" ( 33cm) apart. On the stand is mounted the compass on a light brass frameworkwhich carries tubes on wrackwork for the horizontal magnets. These are provided with screw caps for enclosing the magnets when placed in position. A tube carries a bucket for a vertical magnet. Spheres are fitted on two threaded arms fitted to the framework.
