Liquid compass - aircraft (German airship compass)

Liquid compass.

Bowl: Grey painted white metal. Filler plug at side, expansion chamber at base. A small aperture in the bottom is provided with an electric lamp to illuminate one lubber line and adjacent portion of card. Fitted with a raised verge ring for mounting on azimuth instrument. Inside of bowl unpainted. Provided with four lubber lined painted on strips projecting from side of bowl. Mounted in gimbal ring Dia. 10" (25.4 cm) which is carried in a bracket, U shaped, set in a mounting which can be secured to a bulkhead. Below the U shaped bracket and its mounting is a spindle carrying two racks for correcting magnets, and a scale of 20 degs each way for allowing for variation is provided.

Card: Diameter 6.25" (15.9 cm) White painted aluminium with black markings, graduated to 360 degrees. At centre of card is a large shallow float.

Needle: Unsighted.

Pivot: Unsighted. Inverted type.

On wooden stand, 9.5" x 8.25" x 9" (24.2 cm x 21.0 cm x 22.9 cm)
