Liquid compass - aircraft
Liquid compass.
Bowl: Black painted metal, expansion chamber at base. Has two skins, both very thin metal, outer one mainly to protect the inner one. Fitted with verge ring graduated to 360 degrees. Inside of bowl painted white. Bottom of bowl provided with glass apereture for iluminating the card by means of an electric lamp. Lubber line painted on metal bracket projecting from side of bowl.
Card: Diameter 8.0" (20.3 cm) Mica backed with thick paper? painted white with black markings, graduated to 360 degrees attached to large float at centre, which accommodates magnets and pivot cap.
Needle: Two large magnets of oval section, length 6.0" (15.2 cm)
Pivot: Brass stem secured to glass at base of bowl, accommodating steel pivot point (missing) which engages in jewelled pivot cap in base of card float.
Mounted on ACO circular blackwood plinth. Diameter 9" (22.9 cm)
