Liquid compass - aircraft

Liquid compass.

Bowl: Black painted metal, expansion chamber at base. Has two skins, both of very thin metal, outer one mainly to protect the inner one. Inside of bowl painted white. Bottom of bowl provided with glass aperture for illuminating the card by means of an electric lamp. Lubber line painted on a metal bracket projecting from the side of the bowl.

Card: Diameter 5.25" (13.3 cm) Mica, painted white with black markings, graduated to 360 degs, attached to large float at centre, which accommodates magnets and pivot cap.

Needle: Two loght magnets of circular section, length 4.5" (11.5 cm), mounted through float.

Pivot: Brass stem secured to glass at base of bowl, accommodating steel pivot point which engages in jewelled pivot cap in base of card float.

Mounted on ACO circular blackwood plinth diameter 8.25" (21.0 cm)
