Bearing Plate - Aircraft Compass

A German bearing plate or palorus taken from a Zeppelin.

Frame: Black painted alloy, has two legs 9.25" (24.8 cm) in length for mounting. Carries an alloy circle, graduated to 360 degrees, which can be rotated and set to course steered. Two lubber pointers are fitted to frame 180 degrees apart and two clamp screws are fitted. Centre of frame is fitted with triplex glass, consisting of two sheets of glass and one of celluloid (glass broken), a centre boss on which bearing arm rotates.

Sight vanes: Mounted on bearing arm which is a light framework carrying three horizontal parallel wires; to act as rough drift indicator, two hinged sight vanes, one carrying a slot and a sliding dark shade, 4.5" (11.4 cm) the other a sighting wire and a hinged reflector, 5.5" (14.0 cm)
