- With a crown above and a D below it indicates a Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Seaward Defence (1951-1956) or a Seaward Defence Rating 1st Class (1965-).
- With a star above and a star and letter D below it indicates a Seaward Defence Rating 2nd Class (1951-).
- With just a star above and a letter D below it indicates a Seaward Defence Rating 3rd Class.
