- When combined with a crown above the letter W below it indicates a Chief Petty Officer,2nd Class, Underwater Weapons or an Underwater Weapons Rating, 1st Class dependent on the year it was used.
- When combined with a star above and a star and the letter W below it indicates an Underwater Weapons Rating, 2nd Class
- When combined with a star above and a letter W below it indicates an Underwater Weapons Rating 3rd Class.
- When combined with just a C below, it indicates an Underwater Weapons Rating.
