Button, Thames Nautical Training College, HMS Worcester
Button worn on the uniform of British Cadets attending the Thames Nautical Training College on the HMS Worcester prior to 1920. Since 1920, the British Cadets are rated as 'Cadets, Royal Naval Reserve' and they and ex-Naval members of staff wear Naval uniform. Foreign cadets and members of the staff who have no naval connection still wear WORCESTER uniform and buttons. Cadets attending this training college would have entered either the Merchant Navy or Royal Navy on leaving the HMS Worcester.
Gilt brass domed button with rope twist outer border and raised inner border. Raised word 'WORCESTER' with foul anchor on lined ground.
On the reverse of the button the maker is inscribed - PAISLEY’S GLASGOW
Reference to the uniform worn at the training college was found in correspondence between Captain G.C. Steele, V.C., R.N. and W.E. May (former Deputy Director, National Maritime Museum) dated January 1958.
