Button, Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1748-1787

This button is an example of that worn on a flag officer's undress uniform between 1748-67, on general purpose dress 1767-83 and on full and undress uniform 1783-87. The buttons are made of ivory, faced with brass and would have been attached by means of a catgut shank. The design features an indented edge that surrounds a rope twist border which, in turn, supports a raised octagon. Along the edge of the octagon is a stamped border of repeating circle motifs. In the central reserve is a stamped, stylised tudor rose motif.
