Boat's Liquid Compass and Binnacle
Bowl- Grey painted brass, with glass bottom filler plug at side of large annular bubble-trap. Heavy balancing ring fitted around base of bowl. Inside of bowl silvered and has two black lubber lines painted on side. The verge glass has four lubber lines scribed on underside in form of cross. Verge ring graduated to 360 degrees. Verge glass has a white metal spigot at centre to accommodate azimuth sight and also a vent hole to allow bubbles to escape. Azimuth sight has two folding arms 4.5"(11.5cm) long; one arm carries a slit, the other a slit with thread. Mounted in grey painted brass gimbal ring 7.8" (20cm) diameter in a cylindrical grey-painted copper binnacle.
Card- Diameter 5.15" (13cm) white painted mica, with black markings, graduated to 32 points and to 360 degs. Has large float at centre.
Needle-Said to have four rectangular needles inside float.
Pivot- Stem attached at centre of bottom glass, carries a pivot point which engages in cone-shaped jewelled pivot cup at centre of float.
Binnacle- 8" (22.5cm) diameter and fitted with two handles at side. One side has glazed aperture with socket for oil lamp. A curved metal plate slopes upwards from lower edge of lamp aperture; this and the interior of binnacle painted white to reflect light to bottom of bowl. On the side opposite lamp fitting is a chamber for tools and spare parts (missing). Fitted with flat-topped hood and glass top.
