Button, Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1787-1812
Midshipman's button. Smooth edge. On a smooth background is an anchor with the rope tied to the ring at the top. The rope goes under the right-hand side of the stock, over the shank to the left, then under the shank to the right and then over the right arm and curls under the crown to the left. This style of button was worn by Captains, Commanders, Masters and Mates, Surgeons, Pursers, Warrant Officers and Midshipmen between 1774 - 1860.
