Liquid compass

Bowl-Black painted brass, filler plug at centre of verge glass, expansion chamber fitted to base at centre of glass at bottom of bowl. A heavy balancing ring is fitted around base. Inside of bowl, painted white with a black painted lubber line carried on a flat, white metal plate attached to side. A relative bearing ring, graduated to 360 degs. anti-clockwise is mounted vertically inside bowl. At the centre of the verge glass is a brass plug whcih serves for filling and for inserting a special transit plug, with tools provided in box, and for replacing the pivot. Mounted in a black painted brass gimbal ring 11.8" (30cm) diameter.
Card- Diameter: 6.26" (16cm) white painted mica (?) with black markings, graduated to 360 degs with a second set of mirrored graduations. Attached by a wire framework to a hemispherical float at centre.
Needle-Ten cylindrical needles in three sizes; the eight inner needles being fitted in pairs close together. Mounted below float.
Pivor-Brass stem secured at base of bowl. Upper pivot carried in a conical plug, carried in the filer plug in verge glass, which fits into the float.
Carrying Box-Dims: 13.6 x 13.75 x 7.7" (34.5 x 35 x 19.5cm).Contains a screwdriver, pivot removing tool, cap plug, tweezers, central plug and key, funnel and spare pivot.
