Dirk

Five-ball side ring dirk, the dirk consists of a cross hilt with inversed ends. The dirk has an octagonal gilt pommel. The pommel has a ring for a dirk knot. The fluted white ivory grip has a gilt band round its centre; on the obverse of the band is a small shield, which is engraved with a crown and foul anchor motif. The straight, flat-backed steel blade has a single fuller running to the double-edged spear point. The blade is not decorated. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets and rings. There is a stud for a frog on the obverse of the top locket, and the chape is missing. The dirk is similar to the dress sword worn by Commissioned Officers and Flag Officers of the period (see WPN1006). This style of dirk was superseded in 1805, by the first regulation sword.
