Sword

Solid half-basket hilted sword, the hilt of the sword consists of gilt solid half-basket guard with raised bars and a crown and anchor badge. There is no folding/hinged flap. The sword a lions'-head pommel and back-piece, the mane extending one-third of the length of the back-piece. The sword knot consists of blue and gold rope; the rest of the knot is now missing. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires. The curved steel blade has a pipe back and a double-edged spear point. The obverse of the blade bears the words 'Prosser Maker to the King and HRH the Lord High Admiral London', and is decorated with the Royal arms, a lion and a crown motif. The maker's name is also etched on the reverse of the blade along with a crown and foul anchor motif. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets, rings and a chape. Embossed on the lockets and the chape are acorn and oak leaves. The bottom part of the chape is also decorated with a honeysuckle ornament. The top locket is engraved with the words 'Prosser. Maker to the King and Royal Family, London'. The sword was made in 1828, and the scabbard was refitted later. The National Maritime Museum has in its collection five swords which have no folding/hinged flaps, all made by Prosser, of which this is one.
