Lloyds Patriotic Fund £50 presentation sword
Lloyds Patriotic Fund £50 presentation sword which belonged to Captain Samuel Mallock (died 1845) of the Royal Marines. The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt quillon in the shape of Roman fasces, the guard meeting this at right angles and made in the form of a Hercules club. A snake is entwined around the club, and it is attached to a loop in the mouth of the lion's head which forms the pommel. The sword has a gilt lion's head pommel and back-piece. The ivory grip is diamond knurled. There is a rectangular plaque at the base of the grip, which is decorated with a group in relief depicting a cannon, an anchor and a trident. The sword has triangular langets, which are decorated in relief with a floral pendant. The sword comes complete with a sword knot.
The polished steel blade has been damascened in blue and gold and is decorated with foliage, a rose, a thistle and a shamrock motif. The blade is also decorated with a crown surmounting the monogram 'GR' contained within a wreath and a palm branch, the figure of Hope and her anchor, naval trophies and a globe surrounded by flags and guns. The blade bears the inscription 'From the Patriotic Fund at Lloyds to Lieut S Mallock of the Royal Marines for his energy and gallantry at the storming Fort Mudros on the coast of Spain on the 4th June 1805, by a party of seamen and marines from HMS Loire, as recorded in the London Gazette of the 22nd of the same month'. The sword comes complete with a scabbard.
Captain Samuel Mallock (died 1845) achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant, Royal Marines in 1792. He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant in 1805, to Adjutant in 1805 and to the rank of Captain in 1825. He retired as a Captain in 1835 and died in July 1845.
