Sword

Court sword, which belonged to Reverend Henry Bellairs (1790-1872). The hilt of the sword consists of upturned gilt quillons and an upturned gilt shell. The obverse side of the shell is decorated with an embossed crown motif surrounded by a wreath. The shell is decorated with an embossed pearl border. The gilt grip is decorated with an embossed design of pearls, as is the pommel. The sword comes complete with a sword knot, which consists of gold lace ribbon. The straight steel blade has an oval cross-section. The obverse of the blade is engraved with the words 'FOREST, CORK ST, LONDON', and decorated with crossed flags above and decoration above and below and between. The reverse of the blade is decorated with a crown over a wreath, with decoration above and below. The black leather scabbard has a gilt locket with a shell frog-button, and a chape.

Reverend Henry Bellairs (1790-1872) was born in 1790 and served as a Midshipman in HMS 'Spartiate' at Trafalgar, where he was wounded. After this he left the Royal Navy and in 1808 was appointed Cornet in the 15th Hussars, being promoted to Lieutenant in 1809. He resigned from the Army in 1811 and took Holy Orders, becoming Rural Dean and Honorary Canon of Worcester Cathedral and Chaplain to the Earl of Strafford. He was also a J.P. for the County of Lincoln. He died in 1872.
