Sword

Solid half-basket hilted sword, which belonged to Captain Lord Francis Greenville Godolphin Osborne (1864-1924). The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt solid half-basket guard with raised bars and a crown and anchor badge. There is a folding flap on the inside of the guard to engage with the stud on the top locket. The sword has a lion's-head pommel and back-piece, the mane extending the length of the back-piece. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires. The curved rectangular steel blade, is flat-backed, the edge only sharpened for about half of its length, with a broad groove to within 191mm of the double-edged spear point, and a narrow groove on each length to within 216mm and 432mm of the width respectively. The obverse of the blade is engraved with a crown over the Royal arms of Spain, and the words 'FABRICA DE TOLEDO 1880', with further decoration above and below. The reverse of the blade is also decorated. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets with rings, and chape. The mounts are ornamented with lines and scrolls. There is also a honeysuckle motif on the chape.

Captain Lord Francis Greenville Godolphin Osborne (1864-1924) was born on the 11th March 1864 and became a Naval Cadet on the 15th July 1877. He was promoted to the rank of Midshipman on 23rd December 1879 and to Sub-Lieutenant on the 5th May 1884. He became a Lieutenant on 31st December 1887 and resigned his Commission on the 9th October 1896. His commission was restored under Order in Council of 13th May 1901, establishing the Emergency List. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on the 11th July 1905 and to Captain on the 11th November 1918. He died on 17th October 1924.
