Presentation Sword
Presentation sword, which belonged to Captain Imbert, of the Sicilian Navy (active 1813). The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt knuckle bow, an eagle's head pommel, which has a snake issuing from its beak, which forms the guard. The quillons are formed of two twisted leaves each with fruit issuing from the end. The back of the sword is embossed with a design of fasces. The grip is made from three pieces of mother-of-pearl, the edge of which is now missing. The sword has a flat curved steel blade, with a flat back except for the last 191mm, which is double-edged. The obverse of the blade is engraved with a depiction of Neptune crowned with trident, there is also a central strip of key pattern, along with a scallop shell set between intertwined leaves. The reverse of the blade is decorated with an anchor which is engraved with the words 'PRESENTING ON THE 1ST DAY OF JULY MDCCCXVI, TO THE CHEVALIER IMBERT BY SIR ROBT HALL IN TESTIMONY OF THE ZEAL AND BRAVERY DISPLAYED BY HIM WHILE SERVING IN THE ROYAL FLOTILLA AT MESSINA', along with a naval trophy, the whole is decorated with an outline and wreaths of leaves. The name 'BIBI' is stamped on the obverse of the tang. The wooden scabbard, is covered with black leather, and has two gilt lockets with rings and chape. The top locket is chased with wreaths, whilst the chape is chased with a caduceus on each side. Engraved on the obverse of top locket are the words 'TATHAM LONDON'.
The sword commemorates the attack on Pietra Nera, near Messina, by a combined Anglo-Sicilian force with troops from the 75th regiment under Captain Imbert and Brigadier Robert Hall on the 14th February 1813. His report is reprinted in the Naval Chronicle 29, (1813) 344-5. In it he commends the gallantry of Captain Imbert. He himself received the Order of St Ferdinand and Merit. Robert Hall was made a Lieutenant on the 14th June 1800, Commander on the 27th June 1808, Captain on the 4th March 1811. He died on the 7th February 1818, aged 38. He became a C.B. in 1815, a Knight in 1816. Signora Elena Imbert presented the sword to the National Maritime Museum.
