Stirrup hilted sword, which is thought to have belonged to Admiral Sir John Lawford (1756-1842). The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt stirrup guard, with langets that have been polished smooth. The sword has a lion's-head pommel and back-piece, the mane extending two-thirds of the length of the back-piece. The sword has a knurled ivory grip.

The steel blade is straight, double-edged and has been damascened in blue and gold. The obverse of the blade is engraved with loops of foliage enclosing, a crowned head, the letters 'FA', a crowned head, the letters 'RA', another crowned head followed by three further crowned heads, a naval trophy, Royal arms with the Latin motto 'Dieu et mon droit' below the arms, and further foliage. The steel scabbard has two gilt lockets and chape, with a ring to each locket and a frog button to the top locket. The mounts are ornamented with lines.

The sword is thought to have belonged to Admiral Sir John Lawford (1756-1842). Admiral Sir John Lawford was born in 1756 and became a Lieutenant on the 22nd December 1777. He became First Lieutenant of 'Nimrod' at the Battle of the Saints in 1782. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on the 1st December 1787, to Captain on the 1st December 1793, to Rear-Admiral on the 1st August 1811 and to Vice-Admiral on the 12th August 1819. He became an Admiral on the 22nd July 1830, a KCB in 1838 and died on the 22nd December 1842. The letters 'AMH' on the reverse of the blade are thought to refer to Rear-Admiral Abraham Mills Hawkins (died 1857).

Rear-Admiral Abraham Mills Hawkins became a Lieutenant on the 11th June 1807 and was promoted to the rank of Commander on the 12th December 1812. He became a Captain on the 6th February 1835 and a Rear-Admiral on the 14th February 1857. He died on the 13th November 1857 aged 73. Nothing has been found to connect Admiral Sir John Lawford (1756-1842) and Rear-Admiral Abraham Mills Hawkins (died 1857). They never served together and when Rear-Admiral Abraham Mills Hawkins married in 1819 he retired to Kingsbridge in Devon, while Admiral Sir John Lawford ended his days nearer London, at St John's Wood.
