Presentation Sword

Lloyd's Patriotic Fund £100 presentation sword, which belonged to Lieutenant William James Hughes active 1806. The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt quillon, which is shaped like a Roman fascis the knuckle-guard meeting this at right angles and made in the form of the club of Hercules. A snake is entwined around the club, and it is attached to a loop in the mouth of the lion's head, which forms the pommel. The sword has a gilt lion's head pommel and back-piece. The sword has an ivory grip. There is a rectangular plaque at the base of the grip, which is decorated with a group in relief depicting a cannon, an anchor and a trident. The sword has triangular langets, which are decorated in relief with a floral pendant. The steel blade has been damascened in blue and gold. The obverse of the blade is engraved with the words 'FROM THE PATRIOTIC FUND AT LLOYDS TO LIEUT. W. J. HUGHES FOR HIS GALLANT & SUCCESSFUL DEFENCE OF H.M.FIRE BRIG PHOSPHORUS ON HER BEING ATTACKED BY A FRENCH LUGGER PRIVATEER OF MUCH SUPERIOR FORCE, OFF THE ISLE OF WIGHT ON THE 14TH AUGT 1806 AS RECORDED IN THE LONDON GAZETTE ON THE 16TH OF THE SAME MONTH'. The obverse of the blade is also decorated with a depiction of Hercules standing beside Britannia and a Royal standard. The reverse of the blade is engraved with a shield below Britannia instead of above as is usual in this type of sword, the Royal arms with supporters, the unicorn at the side and the lion recumbent below. The arms are also arranged differently from those usually seen on this type of sword. The black leather scabbard is mounted in gilt. The sword-belt is blue leather and is decorated with floral designs.
