Sword

Royal Marines sword, the hilt of the sword consists of a gilt openwork half-basket guard, with the Queen's cypher 'VR' and a crown inserted in the outward bars. The sword has a gilt pommel and back-piece. The black fish-skin grip is bound with two gilt wires. The slightly curved steel blade has a flat back and one broad groove running to a double-edged spear point. The obverse of the blade is engraved on the shoulder with a proof mark, and is decorated with a design of foliage and the Royal cypher 'VR', with a crown above. The reverse of the blade is engraved on the shoulder with a sword-smith's mark consisting of a crowned human head and a human head wearing a helmet, below this are the initials 'W K & C', along with a design of foliage and the Royal cypher 'VR' with a crown above. The crowned human head is apparently the mark of Weyersberg who in 1883 amalgamated with Kirschbaum under the name of Weyrsberg Kirschbaum & Co., and the helmeted human head is apparently the mark of Carl Reinhardt Kirschbaum of Solingen, Germany. The blade is also marked with what appears to be the name 'A. de Gruchy & Sons, Jersey'. A. de Gruchy & Sons went out of business in 1886 so the sword must date from the period 1883-1886. The steel scabbard has two bands with rings and a shoe. The scabbard is engraved with the letter 'C' and an arrow.
