Dirk

Curved bladed dirk, the hilt of the dirk consists of inversed quillons, which are decorated with spirals and langets. The obverse of the langets is decorated with a globe, Britannia's shield, fasces and foliage. The reverse of the langets is decorated with Britannia's shield, a shield with a star, a drum and foliage. The dirk has a gilt pommel, made in the form of a recumbent lion and a gilt back-piece. The chain guard is missing. The grip is ivory. The steel blade, was originally damascened in blue and gold, of which little now remains. The blade is curved and the obverse of the blade is engraved with foliage and a trophy including guns. The reverse of the blade is engraved with foliage, a Royal cypher 'GR' with a crown above and a trophy with flags. The black leather scabbard has a gilt chape and two lockets with rings. The obverse of the scabbard is decorated with a chequered pattern and a foliage motif. There is a lion's face on the chape. The top locket is decorated in reverse with foliage motifs and engraved with the words 'Irish Portsmouth'.
