Sword

Small-sword of Civil Branch of Royal Navy (Secretary). The gilt small-sword hilt has an olive pommel, pronounced tang button, rudimentary pas d'ane, and the obverse of a shell hinged downwards. The brown horn grip is bound with three copper wires, and has a gilt plate on the obverse side with a crown over foul anchor engraved upon it. The blade is triangular and hollow much worn engravings. On the obverse this consists of, some almost erased decoration, the Royal arms with supporters and 'DIEU ET MON DROIT' below, and the remainder is indecypherable. The reverse is engraved with, almost erased decoration, a foul anchor with crown above and decoration including a winged cherub. The scabbard is wood covered with black leather, most of which has been restored, two gilt lockets (with rings) and chape, all decorated with lines. The top locket has a frog button, and is engraved on the reverse 'DUDLEY/ Grand Parade/ PORTSMOUTH'.
