Sword
American Fighting sword. The hilt consists of a gilt brass 5 ball type guard fitted with a side-ring, also decorated with 5 balls, and an up-turned quillon. There is a gilt brass eagle's-head pommel and an ivory grip which is diamond knurled over most of its surface. The lower end of the grip is damaged. Blade is straight and flat-backed. The scabbard is missing. Engraved on the blade are trophies of pikes, flag, bow, quiver with arrows and Phrygian (?) cap, the heraldic US eagle (the shield showing 15 stars) and a scroll with national motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'. This sword is probably army and made in England for the American market, probably between 1800-1812, the fifteen stars date between 1795-1818.
