Dirk
Dirk made after 1856, which belonged to Rear-Admiral Geoffrey Frederick Burghard (active 1913-1952). The hilt of the dirk consists of a brass cross-guard with slightly inversed arms and acorn finials. On the cross on the obverse of the cross-guard is a roughly oval plaque consisting of a foul anchor with a Tudor crown above, the whole encircled by a laurel wreath, which is knotted at the base. The trailing quillon is pierced near the ferrule. The dirk has a gilt brass lion's-head pommel and back-piece, the mane extending to the straightened ferrule at the top of the grip. There is a ring in the lion's mouth to accommodate the gold and blue dirk knot. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three copper wires.
The steel blade is straight, flat-backed with a 254mm false edge and rectangular shoulder. The blade is etched with dull and bright work for most of its length and has a polished point. The obverse of the blade is engraved at the shoulder with the words 'GIEVES -Ltd- LONDON PORTSMOUTH & DEVONPORT', surmounted by the Royal arms and the words 'By Appointment', interlaced with oak foliage and strap work, and the Royal cypher 'G V R' surmounted by a crown with rays above, followed by further interlaced oak foliage and strap work. The engraving refers to Gieves Ltd, who had premises at London, Portsmouth and Devonport. The reverse of the blade is decorated with a depiction of the Shield of David, and a knot of oak foliage and strap work. It is engraved with the words 'CHIEF CADET CAPTAIN'S AWARD GEOFFEREY FREDERICK BURGHARD R.N COLLEGE DARTMOUTH 20th DECEMBER 1916' and a further knot of oak foliage and strap work, along with a foul anchor surmounted by a crown with rays above, and interlaced with oak foliage and strap work. Wilkinson probably made the blade.
The black leather scabbard has two gilt brass mounts, the top locket is fitted with a ring each side. There is a large steel spring fitted to the back edge of the top locket, which passes through the pierced trailing quillon, when the dirk is sheathed. Two screws and a brass loop secure the spring; the tip is formed of a brass hook. The chape has a small symmetrical shoe. The lockets and chape are decorated with threads and scrolls. In addition the chape is decorated with a formalised honeysuckle ornament. Apart from the decoration the dirk follows the form of the pattern introduced in 1891.
Rear-Admiral Geoffrey Frederick Burghard (active 1913-1952) became a Naval Cadet in 1913, a Midshipman in 1917 and was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant in 1919; to Lieutenant in 1921 and to Lieutenant-Commander in 1928. He became a Commander in 1935; a Captain in 1942 and was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1952.
