Scabbard
Scabbard for dirk, after 1856, which belonged to Rear-Admiral G.F. Burghard (active 1913-1952). The black leather scabbard has two gilt brass mounts, the top locket is fitted with a ring each side. There is a large steel spring fitted to the back edge of the top locket, which passes through the pierced trailing quillon, when the dirk is sheathed. Two screws and a brass loop secure the spring; the tip is formed of a brass hook. The chape has a small symmetrical shoe. The lockets and chape are decorated with threads and scrolls. In addition the chape is decorated with a formalised honeysuckle ornament.
