Cutlass
Cutlass, the hilt of the cutlass consists of a brass knuckle-bow with an upturned disc-shaped finial, and a brass ferrule. The knuckle-bow is engraved with the crest of the 6th Baron Rodney; which consists of a bird motif, probably an eagle, above a crown motif and the words 'URANIA R.Y.S'. The cutlass has a flat pommel and back-piece, and a leather grip. The steel blade is slightly curved, single-edged, flat-backed, with a spear point. The scabbard is missing. The 'Urania' was a 140-ton schooner built in 1848, which until 1851 was owned by the 6th Baron Rodney. The abbreviation R.Y.S. relates to the Royal Yacht Squadron.
