Dirk

Italian Kingdom of the Two Sicilies dirk. The hilt consists of a grooved wooden grip, with flat pommel and prominent tang button. Traces of decoration around the latter are too faint to be distinguishable and the ferrule is plain. An oval cross-guard, has an inset anchor on either side of the blade, and traces of floral decoration. Blade is of flattened hexagonal section, with a slight shoulder, a spear point and etched decoration. There is a black leather scabbard with an ornate top locket, lower part of the scabbard missing frog attachment. The locket is decorated with a band of feathers (?), a scallop shell and fleur-de-lys, with flower. Inscribed on the obverse is 'LABRUND' and on the reverse 'NAPOLI 1845'. The obverse of the blade is inscribed with floral scrolls and similar decoration, an oval surround containing a trophy of arms, comprising spears, shields, suit of classical style armour, and helmet with plume, floral scrolls. Inscribed on the reverse are floral scrolls, an oval surround enclosing a foreign crown above a foul anchor, floral scrolls.
