Sword

Court sword. Owned by Dr Basil Greenhill CB CMG (born 1920). The hilt consists of a gilt urn-shaped pommel with bead decoration, a pronounced tang button, gilt knuckle bow ending in upturned quillons, gilt grip edged with bead decoration, an oval shell edged with bead decoration and a gold bullion swordknot attached to gold brocade strap. Blade is straight with a diamond section tapering to a symmetrical point. There is a black leather scabbard with a gilt top locket, with ornamental stud to accomodate sword belt, and line decoration. The gilt chape also has line decoration. Sword in black leather carrying case. Inscribed on the obverse of the blade is 'HAWKES & CO LTD, LONDON W.1.', crown either over 'EIIR', and there is etched decoration on both sides of blade.
