Sword

Solid half-basket hilted sword. Owned by Lieutenant Ebenezer Wood, Royal Dockyard Battalion. The hilt consists of a solid half-basket guard with raised bars and crown and anchor badge. There is a hinged flap on the inside, a lion's-head pommel with elaborately carved mane extending the full length of the back-piece, and a black fish-skin grip bound with three copper wires. Blade is flat-backed, slightly curved, with a double-edged spear point and etched decoration. There is a steel scabbard, with two rings for suspension from belt and a piece of white cord attached to the rings. Inscribed on the obverse of the blade is a proofmark (post-1854, at the shoulder) within a Star of David, an etched crown and anchor, 'ROYAL/ DOCKYARD/ BATTN' over a crown, and elaborate etched decoration of leaves and acorns. On the reverse is 'HENRY/ WILKINSON/ PALL MALL/ LONDON' (at the shoulder), a crown over Royal cypher 'VR', and elaborate etched decoration of leaves and acorns. On the flat back of the blade is 'C ->->->->------->'.

Ebenezer Wood was a Lieutenant Royal Dockyard Battalion 1 June 1848; Captain Royal Dockyard Battalion 3 May 1849 (the Corps is believed to have been disbanded circa 1858). He was also a shipwright in Devonport Dockyard. The Museum also received blue silk flag with 'VR' cypher, framed, possibly Royal Dockyard Battalion, and a photograph of Ebenezer Wood in decorative gilt frame. The Museum's other Royal Dockyard sword (WPN1054) has white fish-skin grip and black leather scabbard.
