Sword

Solid half-basket hilted sword, owned by Commander W.M. Phipps Hornby. The hilt has a solid half-basket guard with raised bars, a folding flap and a crown and anchor badge. There is a white fish-skin grip and a lion's-head pommel bound with three gilt wires. The blade is slightly curved with a flat-back. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets and a chape. The hilt (on the folding flap) is inscribed with 'W.M.Phipps Hornby R.N.' The obverse shield on the blade has the inscription 'BY APPOINTMENT/ GIEVE/ MATHEWS/ & SEAGROVE/ LTD/ LONDON/ PORTSMOUTH/ & DEVONPORT' and the spine is inscribed 'LONDON MADE'. Part of the Phipps Hornby Collection, it was owned by the donor during his career (see his dirk WPN1598 for Royal Navy career).
