Sword
Triple bar-hilted sword. The hilt consists of a gilt triple knuckle guard which closes when not in use, and is engraved with a leaf pattern and trophies of war. The shell guard contains a foul anchor. It has an ivory pommel. The blade is steel and straight. The scabbard is missing. On the obverse of the blade is inscribed 'I (orT)o 1783' CIII. This sword is part of the Spinney collection consisting of sixteen swords, five dirks and three pistols - AAA3114 (pair) and 3115. The shell guard of this sword contains the usual foul anchor emblem and as the conventional ornnamentation of the hilt includes the Union flag, the hilt is presumably British. The blade is Spanish.
