Marine chronometer. Believed to have been used on Shackleton's 800-mile open boat journey to South Georgia on the James Caird, after his ship the Endurance was crushed in ice. The dial bears the inscription 'THOMAS MERCER MAKER TO THE ADMIRALTY London No.5229'. The box lid is inscribed 'ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY NO.2.'. There are two award crests: 'EXHIBITION SILVER MEDAL 1867 PARIS 1867' and "INTERNATIONAL PRIZE MEDAL 1876 PHILADELPHIA". The number '5229' also appears on the front of the box. There is a letter in the lid behind a pane of glass.
