Eight-day mahogany longcase clock
An eight-day mahogany longcase with commemorative painted dial by Young & Hedridge, Dundee circa 1810.
The weight-driven movement has rectangular plates which are united by four pillars with angular knops, rack striking on a bell, anchor escapement and calendar wheel and jumper mounted to the front plate. The signed twelve-inch arched painted dial, fixed via a cast iron falseplate which is stamped B. Wright & Co. Birmingham, has vertical flared Arabic numerals, hatched minute marks, outer arabic fifteen minute marks, subsidiary seconds and calendar dials. The corners spandrels feature an anchor on seaweed with a border of raised gilt dots. The naively painted arch scene depicts Nelson on 'Victory' at the Battle of Trafalgar held by three officers after the fatal sniper’s shot. The rear of the dial is painted with red lead and painted mark ‘652 Anchor’ to the top left hand corner and ‘107’ behind the arch.
The typically Scottish mahogany veneered case has boxwood stringing throughout. The hood has a scroll pediment mounted with two plain brass roundels and is surmounted by three ball and spire finials. The crossbanded break-arch door is flanked by two freestanding reeded columns with brass capitals. The trunk has canted corners, a triple arched door and a cross banded base with moulded plinth.
