Compass card

Dry compass

Card: Mica covered with paper, white with black markings. It is a double card with the outer rim graduated quadrantally in degrees. The inner moveable portion is graduated to half points with decorated N & E points, and is turned by a brass collar at the centre of the card to allow for the variation and show the true course, while the outer rim shows magnetic.

Needle: 7.9" (20.0 cm) long, flat bar needle painted red, with square ends and a slightly expanded centre.

Pivot: Conical brass pivot cup, with jewel at the top, screwed through the centre of the needle and brass card-turning collar at the centre of the card.
