Dry compass

Card- Made up of several thick layers of mica covered with paper. White with black markings, graduated to 32 points with a decorated East point, edge of card graduated quadrantally in degrees.
Needle- An elongated diamond, 6.252 (15.9cm) with an aperture at centre to accommodate the pivot cap. On either side of aperture, the metal of needle is cut away.
Pivot- Cone-shaped heavy brass cap fitted with jewelled pivot at top, mounted in double brass gimbals and attached to needle by two brass brackets.
