Dry compass

Card-Mica painted light grey with black markings, graduated to 1/4 points. Has decorated N & E points. At centre of card is a hole 1.1" (2.8cm) diameter and two slits 2.25" (5.8cm) long to the N & S points, which accommodate the unusual needle and pivot.
Needle U-shaped thin steel 1.5" (3.8cm) wide, 5.5" (14cm) dia. mounted through slits in the card and projecting 2.25" (5.7cm) above card, and the ends 1.75" (4.5cm) below card. At each of the ends is a piece of brass. At the centre of needle, above card, is fitted an inverted pivot needle, the point of which is 0.5" (1.2cm) above card. A brass bridge is mounted E - W and engages pivot point at its lower end to give pivot and needle rigidity.
