Dry compass

Card: Mica covered with paper, white with black markings, graduated to half points and quadrantally in degrees with a decorated East point. Card has a 1.5" hole at the centre to accommodate the pivot arrangement.

Needle: Two 5.75" (14.6 cm) edge bar needles, attached to the card by light brass struts.

Pivot: The central aperture in the card carries a brass ring in which a bell-shaped weight, which carries the jewel cap at its apex, is supported in substantial brass double gimbals.
